Today we talk about another beautiful palace of our city: Palazzo Madama.
It 's situated in the central Piazza Castello. It was built by the Romans as the "city gate", as evidenced by the two towers and then conglobated into the Baroque facade of the building. In the thirteenth century, William VII leaned against a fortified house. In ‘400, Louis of Acaja enlarged it, adding the back face. Later, some restoration works transformed the castle into a palace for the ducal family.
The redevelopment was due to a design by Filippo Juvarra, first architect of the House of Savoy, which, however, realized only the façade: a Baroque form that does not hide the old medieval castle, but, indeed, gives it importance as a symbol of power. With the passage of time, the castle underwent many changes, according to the uses to which they did.
In the nineteenth century, Carlo Alberto made it seat of the Royal Picture Gallery, then the Subalpine Senate and then the Court of Cassation. At the beginning of ‘900, n the restoration supplement began, to retrieve the original medieval structures that returned to Turin an important document of the 2000 years of history. Since 1934 it houses the Civic Museum of Ancient Art. Since 2010, the facade of Juvarra is being restored; also the gardens surrounding the building will be re-housed: in fact ,they will have some botanical varieties of the medieval period.
